Salt of the Earth
As part of Earth Day celebrations 2023, we will be viewing the beautiful Salt of the Earth, which chronicles the work of award-winning photographer Sebastião Salgado and his 40 year career capturing Earth’s ever changing humanity and the beauty of nature.
Salt of the Earth is a mesmerizing presentation of Sebastião Salgado’s lifelong dedication to capturing humanities’ major events and suffering. The film explores how Salgado’s beautiful black and white photographs illuminated the exploitation of the environment and the humans who inhabit them.
The film is co-directed and narrated by German director Wim Wenders in collaboration with Salgado’s son, Juliano. This provides a personal reflection on Salgado as an often-absent father as a photojournalist, his early career as an economist, and the story of his childhood in Northern Brazil.
“The cinema screen is a good platform for work so passionately idealistic and, perhaps, grandiose. The pictures are the result of Salgado’s remarkable 40-year career as a photojournalist – although that word does not do justice to a vocation closer to artist, ethnographer and self-described “witness to the human condition”. Doors & refreshments open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. Affordable refreshments and popcorn stand on site.
