Take a trip down the rabbit hole…

Petite Maman / 2021 / 73mins / Subtitled / Rated PG

Following the international triumph of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma returns to the mysteries of childhood à la Water Lillies, Tomboy and My Life as a Courgette with her fifth feature, Petite Maman. Delicately playful, and tinged with melancholy, her newest film is a spellbinding adventure in imagination which weaves a spectral fairytale from a child’s-eye view on love and loss.

After the death of her beloved grandmother, 8-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) travels to her mother’s childhood home to help her parents clean out her grandmother’s apartment. Nelly explores the house and its wooded surroundings where her mother, Marion (Nina Meurisse), used to play as a child. After Marion leaves the house suddenly, stricken with grief following her mother’s passing, Nelly meets and befriends a young girl in the woods of the same age, whose name is also Marion (Gabrielle Sanz). Instantly forming a connection with this mysterious new friend, Nelly embarks on a fantastical journey of discovery which helps her come to terms with this newfound loss.

A quietly profound and powerful film, as well as an incredibly moving portrait of grief told through the perspective of a young girl, Petite Maman will take you to a place of magical realism as it explores mourning at an early age, while addressing the importance of imagination and curiosity during these harder times. Processing big emotions in a short runtime, Petite Maman is an enchanting experience and one of the best films about childhood of recent years.
