Marietta

Presented by Fabrica

Marietta / 2021 / 1hr&10mins / Subtitled / Rated PG

This Autumn Fabrica is debuting Olivia Emes’ first feature documentary, Marietta, which chronicles one musician’s lifelong quest to reconcile her own unique voice with the patriarchy and nationalism of her native Cuba. Screened within the context of Fabrica’s Autumn exhibition: At Home in the Water by Vanessa Daws, both stories depict that of courage, community and strength.

Marietta is a Cuban pianist and composer living in Brighton who completes her magnum opus twenty years in the making, and returns home to perform her album for the first time. This documentary showcases local pioneering women and their achievements, much like Daw’s exploration of champion sea swimmer, Mercedes Gleitze.

Marietta introduces the circle of women, healers, and goddesses who nourished her along a journey crossing physical, temporal, and musical borders in the creation of her pièce de résistance, Pasiones y Rituales.

“Fluid camera movement and sensitive composition embody the heart and soul of Cuba in a unique and honest way, showing Marietta’s hometown of Matanzas and the musical pulse of its people in a different light than that of Habana and more popular images of Cuba.” Olivia Emes
