Captain Fantastic

(Captain Fantastic / 2016 / 1hr&58min / Subtitled / Rated 15)

Fresh Perspectives selected Captain Fantastic in response to Fabrica’s autumn exhibition: At Home in the Water by Vanessa Daws, exploring the themes of being immersed in nature. As with Daws’ work, the forest-dwelling-family feel the isolation and danger of living immersed in nature, the strength of endurance and self-discipline and the struggle against adversity.

The film tells the story of a family who lives deep in the forest of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society. After a tragedy occurs the father of the family dedicates his life to transforming his six young children – they are trained to be physically fit, athletic, to think critically, and to guide them in the wild without technology.

“Ross.. says that his film asks whether Ben is “the best father in the world or the worst” and Mortensen does a terrific job of keeping both possibilities alive.” Mark Kermode, Guardian.
